Across the Green Jewel of Java

Jakarta is a megalopolis of 15+ million:


(which also has a strong military presence -- think back only a couple years to the violent repression of East Timor's bid for independence that left nearly a million people dead)

Borobodur is the worlds largest Buddhist temple -- truly breathtaking and immense:






Mt Bromo, an active volcano on eastern Java island... there is a large crater that has a couple cones in the middle, and I arrived just at sunrise and the pink light was coming through the swirling mist that enveloped the crater floor. Horseman were galloping along the road, emerging suddenly from the mist, to meet the hordes of tourists that didn't want to have to walk up the active cone.
